According to Know Your Meme, on August 18th, 2005, Erwin Beekveld brought forth this work into the world. HAPPY TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY, THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD.

sheds a single tear

I regret to inform everyone that @catchaspark’s reblog was made in 2017 and that Taking the Hobbits to Isengard was actually published 17 years ago, not 12 years ago.

I was talking to an old woman yesterday who told me “when I wake up in the middle of the night I figure somebody needs me, so I pray for three things: I pray that someone who is suicidal right then can hang on another day, another hour, another minute. Then I pray for everybody who is in danger in Ukraine and Gaza. Then I pray for somebody I know who is suffering.”

I had just told her that my husband has brain cancer, and he goes to work between 2 and 3am and she said “if I wake up at that time, I’ll know he needs a little extra help and I’ll pray for him to get to work safely.”

whenever someone tries to make you feel bad about being fat, acting like being fat is some unnatural modern corruption of our Naturally Thin Ideal Human State, just remember your neolithic ancestor çatalhöyük skeleton 2058, a possibly disabled “obese” woman who carried heavy loads and stayed active till she died OVER FIFTY!!!! which was a good long life for the time!

image

would skeleton 2058 want you to waste your life and ruin your health chasing thinness??? NO!!!!!!!!!! she wants you vaccinated and active and eating a glorious amount of delicious food in your home with your loved ones. and also collecting auroch skulls

#this is still really cool#and i didn’t look it up myself#but like#life expectancy takes child mortality into account#so unless I’m wrong about the time period#“over fifty” is about as impressive to reach as it is today#harder sure but not by that much#she’s still fucking cool though and a fuck you to fatphobes

just taking the opportunity to nerd out: even considering child mortality, it’s still pretty impressive for this period! from what i understand while it wasn’t uncommon for people to live into their 50s/60s/even older, it was still very common for people to die in their 30s. death as a young adult was especially for those who could and did give birth, and 2058 may have given birth multiple times—the analysis of her skeleton suggests either that or that she had a protruding stomach, but it’s obviously possible she was both fat AND gave birth. so i think her living as long as she did & remaining as healthy as she did was still impressive!

and regardless as you said it’s fucking cool. if you look up art of çatalhöyük or the neolithic in general you are going to see a lot of muscular thin people and specifically cis men. and the common imagination of people seen as female in prehistory is thin cis women staying in the home and making food and caring for babies, conveniently mimicking 1940s US gender norms. but that’s not prehistory!!!!!!! prehistory is fat milfs surviving and living their lives in their communities.

(also here’s the source for the above screenshot! if this interests you they’ve got over a decade of yearly field reports free to read online)

speaking of myths about paleolithic people: this paper about how sexual division of hunting/gathering labor is not supported by evidence and is more likely an overlay of modern gender roles by modern people and this article about how societies that hunted and foragred probably ate much more foraged food than meat, with a split in two ancient women from modern peru showing a diet of about 80% plant matter and only 20% meat, debunking the myth that early societies ate predominately meat and became patriarchal because of the singular importance of men as hunters. your meat based paleodiet is a modern invention. sorry liver king, you lack evidence, your diet is whack, and i hope you’re not overly attached to your feet.

Child mortality was real, but Neolithic life was also GRUELING and sent many people to an early grave. Plus they didn’t know about germs or disinfectant, and were getting fun new zoonotic diseases from living in close quarters with animals for the first time (comparatively). Lots of people died in their teens and twenties and thirties. Over fifty is a very impressive age for Çatalhöyük! Good for her.

yeah yeah fire-based characters are destructive and angry and violent and evil blah blah blah BORING overdone. more fire as a lifegiver. warm and comforting. fire-based characters as guides lighting the way. personal heater in the cold and dark but don’t sleep too close or you’ll wake up with heat rash. fire sterilizes and cauterizes!! more fire-based healers. plants perking up and flowers turning towards them and they attract moths. fire-based characters who are hearths instead of wildfires!! the core of a home the pillar of a community the key to societal advancement. give them an internal flame that visibly glows and flickers instead of a heart that beats. extinguish that light when they die. etc
